Fast-growing, easily utilised marine algae which fix carbon dioxide

BIOTECHNOLOGY

Oil production from cultivated micro-organisms

BIOFUEL

Energy readily convertible from marine plants

Welcome to the BioMara project

The Sustainable Fuels from Marine Biomass project, BioMara, is a new UK and Irish joint project that aims to demonstrate the feasibility and viability of producing third generation biofuels from marine biomass.

Research

The science will investigate macroalgae (seaweeds) and microalgae (single-celled plants) for their potential to provide sustainable fuel. (See Overview for more information.) In addition, the project will study the environmental, social and economic impacts of using marine biofuel.

Staying informed

A key remit of BioMara is to engage with the wider community. Join our stakeholders and keep in touch with research developments and how BioMara may help with long-term energy needs, business development or social projects. More information here...

BioMara News and Events are publicised regularly on the website.

Partners

BioMara has six scientific partner institutes, led by the Scottish Association for Marine Science on the West Coast of Scotland, and employs 30 staff. Meet the Team...
